| Classic Movies vs Modern Movies | | Why generally speaking most of the classic movies are considered to me masterpieces and most of the modern movies are considered to be mediocre?
Why aren't they reviewed as a total movie entity?
What kind of mentality is being used especially from the critics,I honestly don't know!
Yes I have to admit that respect must be given to such movies that dealt with something new back then, but it's like saying that the airplane that the Wright brothers made is better than a modern F-16! Why for example Space Odyssey or Blade Runner might be considered 'classic masterpieces' and not the most recent Star Wars or star trek?
I seen Blade Runner recently and it was just ridiculous with all that special effects that they had back in the 80's (In terms of adaptations I'd rather prefer Minority Report..) And in terms of scenario Chaplin's movies were just ridiculous compared for example with 'As good as it gets'
Any opinions on the issue? | |

| | Turner Classic Movies--What A Day Today! Who Watches This Channel? | | I just got done watching a whole afternoon of the classic movies. These were movies I had seen in my younger days and still enjoy watching them. They had on The Absentminded Professor with Fred McMurray, Bedknobs and Broomsticks with Angela Lansbury, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, War Games, Stand By Me, and Dead Poets Society. All good old movies. Although I couldn't quite get into the Dead Poets Society. It has Robbin Williams in it and this is the first movie that I watched that I didn't care for him in it. I don't know why but I just didn't. I had a completely enjoyable afternoon with the television of TCM and a bowl of popcorn by my side. Do you still enjoy watching the old movies? I do very much. | |

| | Shouod Some Classic Movies Just NOT Be Remade? | | I got my idea for this discussion from a response to another discussion I posted recently about a classic sci-fi film. The poster said it would be great if the movie in question were to be remade with today's technology, that the new generation would then get to see it. I wasn't the only person to think this film at least didn't need to be remade, it was fine the way it was originally. This is not to speak poorly of change or new technology; we've all seen some old movies where the sound doesn't quite match the movement of the lips or where the scenery literally looks like cardboard paintings. However, "new" and "updated" does not always translate to "better".I think most of us will probably agree that about 99.999% of the time the original movie is better than any remakes that follow it, especially to those who saw the original first. I'm sure the fact we saw it first may have something to do with it, but that's not the whole answer. The original usually IS better, especially if the original was truly good or even GREAT because what's the point in trying to improve upon that which doesn't need improving? The same can often be said for sequels - the first is almost always the... | |
