| myLot Discussions about Mary Tyler Moore Memorabilia| Betty White on "Saturday Night Live" - Your Thoughts | | Okay, so it was the most highly anticipated "SNL" in years, with interest surpassing even that of Tina Fey's recent episode. Betty White hosted last night, supported by a sextuplet of past female cast members. Here are my thoughts:Overall, a very enjoyable episode. Yes, you could see Betty squinting to see the cue cards on several occasions, but she wasn't just blandly reading. The woman has a fine sense of timing and, more than that, she was absolutely game for anything. Except, interestingly, doing a parody of any of her notable TV roles, such as "Match Game," "Mary Tyler Moore," or "Golden Girls." Yes, there was the cast singing the "GG" theme song, and then her rocking out her version, but aside from that, barely even a mention. Hmm... curious.Getting back to what*was* there, though. In general, it was a lot of, "We think it's funny if a little old lady says double entendres and other inappropriate things." Now, this may seem cheap of "SNL" until you consider that, well, Betty White herself has been making a career for the past several decades of doing exactly that. She's clearly in on the joke, she practically owns the joke, and frankly,... | |
| | Anyone seen this british sitcom? | | Absolutley Fabulous - It's a british sitcom I am assuming out of syndication as the seasons are now on DVD - season 1-3. I read the little blurb about it on Amazon.com and it sounds funny, but then again, can't really go by what that says as it doesn't say a whole lot.Has anyone seen it? What American sitcom or American actresses can you relate it to? I hear it is similar to Golden Girls and Mary and Rhoda (Mary Tyler Moore show of the 70's). What is your review of the series? Anything else you can tell me about it? There is just absolutely nothing worth watching on tv these days and I have been slowly collecting (based on when they go on sale!) sitcoms and series from the 60's and 70's - back when TV was fun and good and enjoyable and worth watching. I came across this series - didn't know it was british, but it sounded funny. Thanks for any comments | |

| | Dancing w/ the Stars gets Erica and Phyliss! | | Was wondering when it would happen - Susan Lucci, Erica on All My Children, is going to be on the new Dancing With the Stars show - starts Sept 22. I won't say what I think of the actress, but I will say I don't, and never have liked the character, however she is the only original actrss on the show and one of the longest running daytime actresses and all. So should be interestingPlus, they "oldest" dancer is Cloris Leachman - she is hilarious on the Mary Tyler Moore show and most everything else she's done she just made that character special. Should be interesting to watch her and even see sparks fly between her and Susan!!Ted McGinley and Lance Bass are the only other ones I have even heard of! Any favorites for you? | |
| | My bargain for the month with a goal - what's yours? | | I have been watching sales for TV series and movies from the 60's70's and some 80's. That was back when TV was good, sitcoms were funny and movies had a point.I watch Amazon.com and watch theones I want and when they hit $15 for a season, I buy them. But I also wathc as if you spend $25 you get free shipping. SO far, I have been fortunate that I can get 2 seasons ($15 each) and that puts me over for the free shipping. Remember GOmer Pyle USMC? Newhart? Andy Griffith show? Just hilairous to the max. Fun and enjoyable. Anyway, when it was on, I love the Mary Tyler Moore show - wanted to be like her and have that amazingly cute apartment like hers! And a great friend like Rhoda!! I got season 1 and 4 for $15 ea prior, but yesterday there was a sale at Amazon and it was BOGO!! My favorite way to shop! The season 2 and 3 were on sale for $23.99 each and with BOGO, I got not only the free shipping but the box sets for $12 each!My goal is not only to have some good shows to watch for entertainment, but most likely will have to cancel cable and out here, if you don't have cable you don't even get the basic local channels - ABC< CBS, NBC. But since I can get news on line - I"ll... | |
| | Mylot terms of use. | | I was trying to mention a famous book, you know, Melville's classic tale of the big white whale?
Well, it wouldn't let me say Moby****. So**** is now a bad word in any context. Gimme a break. So, from now on, I'll refer to Moby Richard, and blank Van****, and the comic book character "guess who" Tracy. Oh, and I just found out, you can't say the guy who starred with Mary Tyler Moore in a show with his name as the title, also starred in Mary Poppins. I didn't know who uptight Mylot was until now. | |
| | Famous Addicts | | This isn't so much a question as it is a mini-rant. I've sadly had many addicts in my life. Some who now have sobriety, and some that I wonder/worry if they will ever find inner peace. It seems the average person has this idea of who an addict is, what they look like, act like etc and it's so not the reality of addiction. Not every addict, including active addicts are homeless, dirty, stupid, dangerous or degenerate people. They're in every walk of life, and most often you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at them that they struggle with these demons. So I'm sharing this list of celebrities that have spent time in rehabs in the hopes of opening anyone's eyes as to how this disease can touch anyone's life. If it hasn't touched yours, consider yourself blessed.

| | Misplaced sense of humor....? | | There was a discussion question recently about what kind of sense of humor we had, sarcastic, dry, normal.....I think there may be another heading there called misplaced or maybe isolated. I think I would fall into that category easier than any of the others.Have you ever been in a situation where something has struck you as very funny, but you are the only one laughing? Ever seen the chuckles funeral episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show where she is laughing at a funeral and can't stop? That is the type of humor I have. If no one else thinks it is funny I'm going to laugh...:}Picture if you will going to the movies with my two young sons to see the second Indiana Jones movie and they are so embarrassed because I found it funny. Just this morning while I was reading my book while waiting to drop off my clients something struck me as funny....the case workers that help unload clients asked what was so funny and I told them it was a love scene....okey dokey. Now they are all giving me looks like dayum, she is already on the short bus, but maybe she should be riding not driving? So has anyone ever been in a situation where they are the only one laughing? | |
| | Best Series Finales? | | With The Sopranos ending its run I got to thinking about series that got to go out on a grace note with memorable final shows. Among my favorites:The Fugitive (Kimble finally catches up with the one-armed man who killed his wife and clears his name)The Mary Tyler Moore Show (everyone except Ted Baxter is fired but the show still ends up being as charmingly funny as it poignant)Newhart (Bob wakes up with Susanne Pleshette, his TV wife from The Bob Newhart Show, and finds that the whole series was a bad dream)Six Feet Under (we discover the final fates of all of the major characters)What are your favorite series finale episodes? | |
